I (Peter Karetka) am seated amidship, looking up. Not wearing life jacket. I had offered it to a survivor.
We saw a lot of the men from the Davis in the water. I told the Captain we had to get the whale boat into the water to rescue the crewmen drifting away from my ship. The Captain responded saying, you will need volunteers for that. My immediate response was "I volunteer". Joe Bergen was also a volunteer. We pulled 12 men into the boat. Be they husbands, fathers, sons or brothers, to be reunited with family. I was awarded the "Navy Commendation" medal.
I was aboard the USS Hayter when the Davis was sunk by the German U boat 546. On April 24,1945. The Davis was struck by a torpedo on her port side, amidships, breaking her in two. The Hayter began rescue operations. We rescued more than 60 survivors. The German U boat was also sunk.
