Yorktown under way after repairs. At 16:41 enemy torpedo planes attacked the Yorktown. Planes so close to Hughes you could see their open cockpits, faces grinning & headgear flapping.

USS Hammann
USS Hammann DD-412 under way in emergency astern when torpedoes from Sub I-168 hit the Yorktown. I feel the Hammann sank due to the explosions on the Yorktown. It is written Tanabe set his torpedoes to run at a depth of 19'. The draft of the Hammann is aproximately 12'. The Yorktown draft is approximately 28'. Therefore the torpedoes would have gone under the Hammann & hit the Yorktown, because the Hammann was in emergency astern, with her fantail awash with ocean water, she was directly above the torpedo hits, causing her hull to crack open and therefore sinking immediately.

On June 7, 1942 at 06:59 the sea accepts the USS Yorktown CV-5. She went gracefully, like a lady, BOW FIRST Her flag still flying proudly as she slid into the sea...
