The USS Hornet CV-8 had "Plenty of Sting". The Japanese named her the "Gray Ghost of the Pacific". She was at Midway & Santa Cruz. Her squadrons were:  Scouting Eight, Bombing Eight, Torpedo Eight & Fighting Eight.

Hornet after Attack
The destroyers Anderson DD-411 & Mustin DD-413 were unable to complete this misssion. The Hornet was a tough one.  The accounts written during the war, were not accurate due to the fact that secrecy was necessary.
The Hornet ended up being sunk by the Japanese. Around dusk, the Hornet finally slid into the sea. All but 129 of her 2,900 crewmen were rescued.
I watched the kamikaze pilots hit the Hornet. We went alongside to take off survivors before she sank. Our ships fired at the Hornet after to try to sink her so she would not fall into enemy hands.
