The Hughes was always in close to the Yorktown during & after the engagement. On the bridge we felt, if any more live shipmates were left aboard the carrier we could rescue them with a throw of the monkey fist.

Pre-WW II action::: Naval blockade of the French Aircraft Carriers at Martinique, French West Indies.   Part of Neutrality Patrol 1939.  Stalked the German Battleship Bismarck in Artic Ocean.   One of the 1st USS Naval vessels stationed in Iceland for Anti-sub warfare.
The USS Hughes DD-410 was built in Bath, Maine by the Bath Iron Works. The ship was launched 7/17/1939 & commissioned 9/21/1939.
