June 10, 1995 Casco Bay, Portland, Maine Hosted by Officers & Men of USS Portland (LSD 37)
We wanted to have our 50th anniversary, of the end of WW II, reunion/memorial service on a Navy ship. Thank you to Senator Edward M. Kennedy and his efforts, this memorial service was held. Thank you to US Navy Department for sending the Portland. "WELL DONE" to the crew of the USS Portland (LSD-371) This reunion/memorial service was to honor the survivors and relatives of crewmembers from both ships. Moreover, it was to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifce.
The USS F. C. Davis was torpedoed by U-546 (German Submarine) on April 24th. She sank within a period of 15 minutes. The USS Hayter helped the surviving crewmembers of the Davis, rescuing more than 60 survivors.
June 10, was a perfect day, sunny skies and calm seas. We started with assembling Ship's Company on the flight deck; they then stationed Rifle Platoon and Honor Platoon; then the invocation; National Anthem; opening remarks; Honor Role of those who have passed; Wreath Laying Ceromony; prayer; Committal of the Wreath; benediction; Rifle Platoon three volleys; Taps.
This box was our time capsule. There was a bottle, collection of newspaper clippings of the history for the past 5 years. We opened our time capsule at our Hayter reunion, Virginia Beach, VA in May of 1994. We opened the bottle & toasted to our good health.
